In a bold move, Big Law is doubling down on artificial intelligence despite mounting legal risks associated with AI-generated inaccuracies. Judges across the United States have begun issuing sanctions against lawyers who submit briefs containing citations to fictitious cases, a phenomenon attributed to AI tools that generate ghost precedents.
This troubling trend has not deterred major law firms from embracing AI; rather, it has intensified their commitment. On Tuesday, Anthropic unveiled its most extensive expansion into legal workflows, introducing over 20 new integrations designed to enhance the efficiency of legal practices.
These integrations include 12 role-specific AI plugins tailored for tasks ranging from mergers and acquisitions due diligence to drafting employment handbooks, alongside a significant integration with Microsoft 365 that embeds Anthropic's AI tool, Claude, across various applications such as Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Prominent law firms, including Freshfields, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Holland & Knight, and Crosby Legal, have already begun utilizing Claude in live matters, indicating a strong industry shift towards AI adoption.
Furthermore, Anthropic reported that over 20,000 legal professionals attended its recent webinar, the largest legal session it has ever conducted, underscoring the growing interest in AI solutions within the legal sector.
Despite the challenges posed by hallucinations in AI outputs, the legal industry appears poised to integrate these technologies more deeply into their workflows, reflecting a significant transformation in how legal services may be delivered in the future.
