The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has been undergoing significant transformations, particularly with the emergence of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a formidable force. The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, has recently become the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, securing 108 seats.
However, this number falls short of the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member House, prompting TVK to seek alliances to form a government.
In a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party has severed its long-standing alliance with the Dravidian major DMK and extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Joseph Vijay.
This move comes after Congress won five seats in the recent elections as part of the DMK alliance but opted to back the TVK, which has emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
The Tamil Nadu Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, has requested the TVK to provide proof of majority support from MLAs to facilitate the formation of the government, indicating that the TVK must demonstrate backing from at least 118 MLAs. Reports suggest that the TVK could offer two Cabinet positions to Congress as part of this coalition arrangement.
The Congress party's media chairperson, Pawan Khera, defended the decision to support the TVK, arguing that it should not be seen as a betrayal of the DMK, emphasizing the need for like-minded parties to collaborate.
Meanwhile, the DMK's allies, including CPI(M), CPI, and VCK, are still deliberating their stance on supporting the TVK, which adds an element of uncertainty to the coalition's future. This political realignment reflects the dynamic nature of Tamil Nadu's electoral landscape and the ongoing negotiations among parties following the recent elections.
