University of California, Davis researchers found that spending three minutes with a miniature horse or donkey lifted adolescents' spirits and the feel-good effect lingered after the animal left.
The study recruited 61 teens who interacted with two miniature horses, Olivia and Randy, and two miniature donkeys, Mary and Memphis, and noted that nationwide 40% of high school students report persistent sadness while nearly 20% of youth ages 12 to 17 had a major depressive episode in the past year.
